Vishal Bharadwaj |
Gulzar |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan |
Everything comes together here: an unexpected situation, great singing, lyrics that couldn't get any better, and a simple composition that is just about perfect. -Ramanand
Simple yet the best!
The best of the year! Rahat again! -Arun
Tops 'em all. The song is awesome in a very twisted sort of a way. I love the picturization and the lyrics. Love the rhythm and the middle eastern, east European base; the excellent rendition; and the fact that it is not a "typical" Rahat song and yet he has come out so gallant. -Sowmya
Simply delightful all around. -Shalini
Inspired by Ravel's Bolero. Lovely use of accordian. Strong gypsy/eastern european style is beautifully woven in. Rahat's singing is controlled, which provides a nice fusion and contrast. Use of Pizz. Strings introduces a orchestra-ic feel which probably was not necessary, but whavever. -Pranav
If Vishal+Gulzar=Win, Vishal+Gulzar+Rahat=almost Perfect! Everything is great about this song: the tune, the arrangement, the lyrics, the singing. How does he think these metaphors up! -UVR
Fabulous singing, lyrics and music. A song that'll remain on your playlist for days. My most favourite song of the year. -Gajendra
Best of the movie! -Neha
Wish I can give a 6 or 10 to the lyrics - outstanding narration of the whimsical wishing of the aged mind. An excellent infusion of gypsy into a typical Indian folk - very seamless. Very reminiscent of an old SJ song - not just for the accordian. -Shashi
The retro ambience, magical RFAK, Gulzar saab's naughty but innocent lyrics and the way it's been used in the film - Superb! Played it the most last year! -Pavan
Not great by Gulzar and Vishal's standards, yet one of the best songs of the year. -Amarendra |

Brij Mandal, Bhadwai |
Raghuveer Yadav, Brij Mandal, Bhadwai |
One from the heart - and very relavent. We have lost the art of folk music used to narrate the day to day realities. The song might be considered offbeat but is no less competent in terms of singing, verse and composition. -Shashi
WAAH!! -Neha
Love the agrarian feel that this song offers. I like Raghuveer Yadav's unrefined voice, and the picturization is simply superb. -Sowmya
I'm probably overrating this, but its rawness was such a relief from all the other super smooth songs of the year. -Shalini
Mr. Yadav is great in this song. -UVR |

Wow!!! -Arun
What a great addition to the genre of the motivational song! -Ramanand
Folk rock! Loved it. -Shalini
This one is more inspirational - the rock-piano infusion works nice. -Shashi
Loved it. Amit Trivedi must be a master of these type of song at present! Starts off completely folk-ish and just takes you apart in ecstacy when it goes into the rock. Even the piano and other counters are mind-blowing! Then he introduces the rabaab style middle eastern guitar! Hats off! -Pranav
A lead voice barely in sur, a backing voice doing pseudo classical harkats. And use of words purely for their phonetic value. Pretentious. -Vibhendu |
Indian Ocean |
Sanjeev Sharma, Swanand Kirkire |
Indian Ocean |
Very Bhatiyaali - the rhythm is so reminiscent of 1942. What redeems the song is the originality - the tabla player, the spirited singers of the band, the punch in the lyrics and of course the rock/jazz infusions - this song works…of course it also reminds one of Phir Dhoom and Dhoom Pichak. -Shashi
Indian Ocean hits the mark! -UVR
Trademark Indian Ocean piece, nicely reused here. -Ramanand
"रंग रगीला परजातंतर" - साल की सर्वश्रेष्ठ पंक्ति. -मिहिर
All songs from this movie were outstanding just because they were not over-produced!!!! Needed the folk situation, and you got that. Lyrics are very topical as well. -Pranav |
Vishal Bharadwaj |
Gulzar |
Rekha Bhardwaj |
Sublime! -Arun
Astounding singing. Music - almost unplugged, the lyrics depict the thirst of the hopeless. -Shashi
Rekha, though I like her a lot, should work on her enunciations. -Neha
What a song. Jazz rhythm, loungy feel, amazing guitar, piano, music bells, bass and RB's voice - just mesmerizing. There are places where she is a bit pitchy but that adds a raw beauty to the song. Auto-tuning it would have killed the song. In fact, very little reverb (almost non-existent) and no delay in the vocal is so essential for the feel of this song. In short - Perfect! Just my kind of song. -Pranav
Rekha is spell binding in this song. Rustic, soft, and wonderful lyrics. -Sowmya
Vishal is one of the very few composers who really “gets” Gulzar. His tune for these words (“वो जो बहते थे आबशार, कहाँ?” AAH!) is delivered beautifully by Rekha. -UVR
A slightly different Rekha Bharadwaj than usual and is most welcome. A song to be heard at low volumes with earphones while soaking in the words. -Gajendra |
Vishal Bharadwaj |
Gulzar |
Rekha Bhardwaj |
Beautiful blend of classical with pace. The lyrics set themselves apart as examples of true class. Love the door opening/moving sounds, the sitar interludes… wow. -Shashi
The fusion doesn't work for me, but it's great to hear Rekha Bhardwaj. -Shalini
-UVR
Love what Rekha's voice can do to a song. In hands of another singer it probably wouldn't sound half as nice. -Gajendra
I'm a sucker for semi-classical fusion type songs so I have to give this high marks. Gulzar's lyrics are getting monotonous - seems to have similar theme and consistent use of "sajivaropan alankar" and in his attempt to get too fancy with it, sometimes meter of the song is compromised. I have to say though, I would rather have that than compromised meter in other songs with crappy lyrics. -Pranav |

Amit Trivedi |
Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Amit Trivedi, Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Lovely upbeat melody that works well with the lyrics; Lots of little catchy details punctuate the song. -Ramanand
Finally, something likeable about the album. The beginning, a certain relaxed tone, and specially the lyrics. This is probably the territory Amit Trivedi should stick to. The pseudo-taans are here as well but for one straying off sur does not jar as much. -Vibhendu
Sigh! What a song! Udaan should be rated the best album! -Neha
jebo.n me.n ham raate.n liye ghooma kare - Gulzar must be envious! :-) -Shalini
Like the rhythm. Nicely layered. Captivating. -Sowmya
Heard this song 3 times and still cannot remember it - decent but no great shakes. -Shashi
Completely and pleasantly surprised when the drums' rhythm starts - the whole country feel is something I never expected when the song started - great job. -Pranav |
Vishal Bharadwaj |
Gulzar |
Sukhwinder Singh, Mika Singh |
I haven't heard a road song quite like this, not in a long while at least. Instantly catchy and immense fun. -Ramanand
My first likeable song of Mika. Rhythmic, vigorous and a true contrast in the singing - Sukhwinder versus Mika. As for lyrics - unbeatably rustic and common. -Shashi
Gulzar having fun is heady stuff. -Shalini
Vishal creates a catchy tune and Gulzar makes the best use of it. What a combo! -Pavan
Love, love this song. Like the energy and the fun music. -Sowmya
Nothing special in singing. I don't know what's ibn-e-batuta so that combined with my comment above on Gulzar's approach to lyrics, it was down one notch. -Pranav
The song delivers the fun it promises. It rarely gets more enjoyable than this! -UVR |

Amit Trivedi |
Javed Akhtar |
Amit Trivedi, Nikhil D'Souza, Neuman Pinto |
Mellow in the nicest way possible. -Shalini
Another one of my favorite from the list. Starts with the steel guitar, has the country feel and then transforms into blues - and what a cracking job in singing!!! Outstanding!! -Pranav
Hushed vocals - an Amit Trivedi staple work this time. A lovely laidback number. -Vibhendu
The singer's youthful and raw voice makes this song sound fresh and vibrant. -Sowmya
Reminds of the serenity of some English tracks. -Gajendra
Kind of a song that sets up the mood. -Pavan
Decent fare. -Shashi
Nice little guitar-backed piece, but if only someone better was doing the vocals. -Ramanand |
Indian Ocean |
Noon Meem Raashid |
Indian Ocean |
Starts of like predictable rock use for inspirations josh-e-junoon type of songs - however by the time we are on the 2nd antara - we are completely hooked - the guitars very mesmerizing - the singing inspired and does justice to the words - we need Indian Ocean back on the mainstream. Enough of the sufi/urdu/qawaali mundane stuff - usher in new (err...old) blood. -Shashi
Wonderful! Wonderful! -Arun
The lyrics are awesome in every song nominated from Peepli [Live]. -UVR
Pritam |
Irshad Kaamil |
Mohit Chauhan |
Even though mashed with the qawwali form (that's been a - sometimes annoying - feature of 2010), this is a fine song with a distinctive quietness throughout. Works very well as a romantic tune. -Ramanand
One of the best of the year... Mohit's voice has that charm! -Arun
One heck of a nashiilaa song. The singer sounds drunk which adds value to the song. The music is very expressive and strikes a chord. -Sowmya
Lovely singing. A song to be listened multiple times. -Gajendra
The songlist seems replete with the Urdu influence in lyrics - qawaalis, sufi style singing, rabb-Khuda-noor, etc. All singers tend to be either from the Rahat Ali or Kunal Ganjawala family. Every song has a qawaali-like chorals, arrangement is basic rhythm mostly electronic with some tabla and harmoniums thrown in for the classical effect. -Shashi |
Amit Trivedi |
Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Amit Trivedi, Neuman Pinto, Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Why a song about aazaadiyaa.N and naa Daranaa begins on such a hushed, whispery note. Frankly does nothing for me, not helped by a bunch of disinterested students parroting a shloka in a class. The song does not soar even where it is pretending to. -Vibhendu
Great composition with so many layers…really evokes a feeling of 'aazaadii' -Shalini
Like the violin-sitar in the interludes, the singing is non-jarring but nothing special. -Shashi
Taken outside the context of the film, the songs of the film didn't have as much of an impact on me as they had when I was watching the movie. The lyrics are interesting in and of themselves, but the effect is diluted without the visuals in accompaniment. -UVR
The song that signifies the entire film. Wonderfully sung and composed. -Karthik
Like the way it's sung - ballad style (have to give Rahman credit for introducing it in desi music) but Amit Trivedi really rocks. -Pranav
Whatta song! Amit Trivedi has arrived! -Neha |
Monty Sharma |
Javed Akhtar |
Shankar Mahadevan |
Rollicking rock - excellent rendition - satisfying. -Shashi
This classical-fusion has a little too much going on, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. -Shalini
The combination of classical with rock is pretty good. I like the feel of the song overall. Shankar has very easily maneuvered his way through the song just like 'sapano.n se bhare nainaa', but the arrangement is not as spectacular as the latter. -Sowmya
Rocking music, rocking singing! -UVR
Loved it. Great singing, amazing arrangement and I never listened to lyrics too much anyway :). Just got a bit jarred by some of the words - sugandh, dRRishTi - not smooth enough from the "musicality" point of view. -Pranav |
Sajid-Wajid |
Gulzar |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Suzanne D'Mello |
Rahat's magic again! -Arun
Did they need those english lyrics! Such a lovely song! -Neha
The gratuitous English lyrics strike again. Sigh. -Shalini
Love the accordian, the male singer portions are nice. The western influence jars - why is the Indian version of any gora-western influence always involves a 150 piece orchrestra, ballroom dancing and the Vienna Philaharmonic? Wish someone had studied the music of the British in those days and incorporated. The desi portion works. -Shashi
Sunidhi's cameo towards the end rescues an otherwise ok but not a great song. -Vibhendu
Lovely tune and very soothing arrangements. -Sowmya
Yet another RFAK song! Where are the other singers? And I don't mean Salim M/Vishal D/Shekhar/Sohail or Mika/Mohit. Can we have more of Sonu Nigam please? -Amarendra
Did I admit yet I like Rahat's singing a lot? -UVR |
Amit Trivedi |
Javed Akhtar |
Anusha Mani, Neuman Pinto, Nikhil D'souza |
Beyond the already fabulous soundtrack of Aisha, this song emerges, albeit after we've gorged on the more massy tracks, as the soundtrack's best! -Karthik
The violin refrain at the beginning and elsewhere is the best part about the song , holds it well. 'kaliyaa.N murajhaa gaye?'- how did Javed Akhtar let that pass, or does it go with the prevailing laissez-faire attitude in these matters? -Vibhendu
Love this song. Lovely jazz/club arrangement. Cannot beat *real drums*! Amazing violin leads and counters. Splendid guitar (lead and rhythm both). Singer's is the perfect voice for this song. -Pranav
100 points for the violins and drums - beautiful tango between the two. -Shashi
The cello is haunting and the singing good and the combination makes for a very nice listening experience indeed. Proper Urdu talaffuz no longer seems to be a pre-requisite for singers :-( and I've chosen to ignore the singer's mispronunciations even though it pains my poor heart so! -UVR
I liked that the song conveys melancholy sans melodrama. -Shalini
The simplicity of the song captured my attention. Beautifully laid out with the violin piece streaming back and forth and nice chords. -Sowmya
Nice use of the violin. -Gajendra |
Vishal Bharadwaj |
Gulzar |
Vishal Bhardwaj |
Lovely song: one with depth, simplicity, and intensity; points for being different than other songs of the year. -Ramanand
The Vishal Bharadwaj factor! The song is no doubt in Vishal's now-familiar template and is something he gets Suresh Wadkar to sing, but the man never fails to grab attention even with such familiar songs! -Karthik
Vishal is fast occupying the top 3 spots in my personal list of Best Contemporary MDs! -UVR
This one surprised me the most among the lot - A strong Amit Trivedi chhaap on this song? Dare I say Gulzar saab can take a leaf - you can write about aa.Nkhe.n, Khwaab, and yet be "maulik" and profound without going completely overboard! -Pranav
aur phir yuu.N huaa... ki kuchh nahii.n huaa... hamane almost skip kiyaa…but the minimalist arrangement with the focus on singing works. -Shashi |
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy |
Niranjan Iyengar |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shankar Mahadevan, Richa Sharma |
One of the best of the year! (and no wonder..its Rahat once again!) -Arun
There has been an overdose of the SEL-Sufi format, esp. for Karan Johar; still, a well-composed and balanced song like this still works well. RFAK has been involved in many such songs this year, but the overall package works much better than most of the others. -Ramanand
A very competent song - singing, composition - completely in the mood. -Shashi
Stupendous refrain (aka chorus/mukhda). The verse (antaraa) manages to meet the demands put on it by the chorus, just barely, but it does. Rahat's presence in the vocals doesn't hurt. -UVR |
Sajid-Wajid |
Gulzar |
Rekha Bhardwaj, Sharib Sabri, Toshi Sabri, Shabaab Sabri |
Beautiful! -Shalini
A very well executed song. I am slanted towards pastoral songs. But Rekha has again delivered superbly. Her voice has this lazy and a beautiful comatose feel that makes the "pining" in this song even more tangible. -Sowmya
I found Sajid-Wajid's mixing of the typical bhajan-kiirtan type orchestration (ma.njiraas, etc) with a qawwaalii-style male supporting voice line terribly interesting. -UVR
Rekha Bharadwaj's singing elevates a typical Sajid-Wajid arrangement to a higher plain - very enjoyable product. -Shashi
Rekha shows why she's the best choice for a thumri in a film today. Music also rises to the occasion showing the background of the composers. -Gajendra
What's with the mad chorus, drowning Rekha's spirited singing? At places, the chorus even goes all Bhangra. -Vibhendu
Sajid-Wajid do know how to pack a punch in their arrangement. Very very catchy. -Pranav |
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy |
Javed Akhtar |
Shankar Mahadevan, Alyssa Mendonsa |
Fabulously catchy dance track, in true SEL style. -Karthik
Despite some of its shortcomings, one of my favourite songs of the year, particularly for its attention-grabbing hook line. -Ramanand
Very similar to the Kal Ho Na Ho song - It’s the Time To Disco…still manages to attract. -Shashi
SEL are past masters at how to convert a simple tune into an entertaining package through excellent arrangement and orchestration. -UVR
Regular Javed-SEL fare. Very good overall though. -Amarendra
Not SEL's best but still fun. -Shalini
Love the variable tempo. 80s style fused with Indian classical, folk and hip-hop! Nicely done. -Pranav |
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy |
Javed Akhtar |
Shafqat Amanat Ali |
The spirited singing elevates this above the other quasi-qawwalis that littered the 2010 musicalscape. -Shalini
Wow… Shankar Ehsan Loy have found their groove…some of the best qawaalis from them. -Shashi
The phrase “aahaT Khwaabo.n kii” is very nice. Shafqat's voice does a great job here (though I can't help wonder if Shankar wouldn't have done an equally good job). -UVR
Though in the usual SEL-Karan Johar-Qawwali vein, a catchy melody and well sung. -Ramanand
This song has a hypnotic feel to it. Shafqat even though not endowed with a powerful voice does a pretty nice job of rendering. Well blended music. -Sowmya |
Amit Trivedi |
Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Amit Trivedi, Joi Barua, Neuman Pinto |
Exceptional, in all respects; brilliantly appropriate for the film's theme too. To me, this is the finest song of 2010. -Karthik
Each and every turn there's a surprise - even check out the drum rolls - which are so different and non-traditional. 2/4 beat but has no syncopation on beat 1, which gives a completely different feel. Lovely guitar leads too and then he has the gall to introduce just acoustic guitar and pan flute - which takes it to a celtic-folk level - but before you get used to it, it switches to a jazz scale and then back again to rock... I can go on and on. -Pranav
After an overdose of Rabba-Khuda-Maula, this album has too much inspirational tunes. This one is decent - no great shakes compared to Naav. -Shashi
A song that talks of flying and literally gives one the feeling. Good job by all. -Gajendra |
Mithoon |
Sayeed Qadri |
Kshitij Tare, Chinmayi |
Gets boring after the 3-4 minutes but points for half-way decent pronunciation of the Kashmiri lyrics. -Shalini
Heard it all before… the singing is refreshing. -Shashi |
Sajid-Wajid |
Faiz Anwar |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan |
Has an old-style quality to it that I found appealing. -Shalini
One of the best of the year! -Arun
Catchy hook-line, RFAK is in his element here; Winning simplicity. -Ramanand
Love the way Rahat emotes. One of those songs that you don't have to listen twice to love. -Sowmya
Pick of the album. -Gajendra
Why on the earth every second love song has to be sung by RFAK! They're killing him softly with these songs. -Pavan
Rahat's singing never fails to impress, yet the song gets an overall '1' from me because of the sub-par lyrics. -UVR
This one was an interesting one for me. Nothing special/different but still the melody of this composition is heart-warming. I like listening to this song. -Pranav
Nice rhythm pickup once the chorus joins in. -Shashi |
Pritam |
Irshad Kaamil |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan |
Sigh. One more of the same RFAK-type of song. He is getting boxed. -Ramanand
The only reason this song is catchy is because it is so beautifully rendered by Rahat. -Sowmya
In spite of Rahat, it's the other version of this song I prefer. -UVR
Just loved the retro-sort of feel of this song. I can listen to it many times in future too. -Pranav
One of the best songs of the year. -Gajendra
A shame - the song was forgotten as soon as finished listening - only thing that remains are certain words and the singing. -Shashi |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Vishal Dadlani |
Shekhar Ravjiani |
A much better version - in terms of rendition and music arrangement. The simple arrangement with guitars is endearing. -Shashi
There is a lot more feel that this song provides than the non-reprise version. I love Shekhar's voice and his singing. The melancholic nature of this song is brought out only in this version and that's what makes it so charming. And most of all I like the simple strumming without all the extra jazzy music. -Sowmya
Nice idea to reprise the other song, because the basic melody line is good, but drags in the 2nd half. -Ramanand
Higher overall points just because I like unplugged versions. Singing is not bad and like the "live" feel of the song. -Pranav
… but Shekhar steals the ball from Shafqat and … gooooooooal! -UVR
The reprise is slightly better than the duet largely due to the singing by shekhar. -Gajendra
Like the humming at the start and the minimal guitar music. -Shalini |

Composer Shailendra Barve makes his mark even in a soundtrack that has so many well-known composers. Cham cham is gorgeous! -Karthik
Though Sonu Nigam over-reaches sometimes, this is still an interesting song that flaunts the harmonium. -Ramanand
Oye Rabba - another Rabba-Shabba. Spirited singing by Sonu - but no Jodha Akbar tis be. -Shashi
he bhagawaan - why doesn't Sonu honestly stick to mimicry? What is he trying, singing with like closed mouth - trying to sound like Rahman? Got bit by the Sufi bug? I know the song is like Afghan/Middle Eastern tribal sort of composition but it's not working dude! Perfectly good composition and arrangement screwed up! Sorry. -Pranav
Some interesting pronunciations/enunciations here. -UVR |
Shailendra Barve |
Jeetendra Joshi |
Sunidhi Chauhan |
A song made for Sunidhi. She shows her range in the song. -Gajendra
Nice song - although I'm beginning to get allergic to use of "piyaa" and "saa.Nvaraa" just like "maulaa" and "zi.ndagii" in songs now! -Pranav
Nice singing and use of flute. -Shashi |
Salim-Sulaiman |
Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Salim Merchant, Sunidhi Chauhan |
Energy and Fun. The initial string sets up the tone that keeps you hooked all through. -Pavan
“haay mai.n Duubaa biskuT ho gayaa” -- I like that! It's a pity the song overall is rather middling. -UVR
Berry Berry catchy prelude and mukhada, good blend of dance rhythm with folks - quaint typical Delhi lyrics. -Shashi
Bhangra-rock? Not bad :) -Pranav
A song made for the discos and weddings. -Gajendra
The lyrics are mildly amusing but overall the song is just annoying! -Shalini |
Hanif Sheikh |
Hanif Sheikh |
Salim Merchant |
A surprisingly poignant track that stays on and on. The tune is simple and familiar but the overall package is brilliantly put together. -Karthik
Lovely song. Nice singing by Salim Merchant. -Gajendra
Haven't seen more blatant use of autotune but the melody and arrangements are good. -Pranav
So pedestrian. -Neha
Enough with the Khuda's already! The song is redeemed by some refreshing rhythm and singing - finally the choir like chorus does not seem out of place. -Shashi |
Sanjay Leela Bhansali |
A M Turaz |
Shail Hada, Rakesh Pandit |
I liked the way the music has been weaved into the lyric in an ostensibly free-form way (but not really). -UVR
Mehakta Hoon. Behakta Hoon…Dehakta Hoon…why not Lehakta Hoon… -Shashi
The second voice and the pitch is jarring. -Amarendra
Points for just using the word 'itr' -Shalini
The singer(s) have extremely powerful voices and they utterly captivate you. Love all the twists they have given to the song. I also love the fact that the singer stands apart in this song and the music just lurks in the background. -Sowmya
The lyrics are lovely. Its nice to see many more voices coming up. Wish they'd stay and be more than niche singers. -Gajendra
Reminds me of the Bhupinder song from Kinara 'ek hii Khwaab'. -Neha
Loved the composition, wordplay and singing. Specially the way Rakesh Pandit's voice is blended! -Pavan |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Kumar |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan |
One of those songs where the singer exhibits more allure than the overall song itself. And the music blends well and doesn't overshadow the singer. That is one reason why I like this better than the female version. -Sowmya
Two points to music for the guitars - especially the bass. -Shashi
Rahat's singing is the cherry on top. -UVR
Expected better from Rahat. -Gajendra |
Shantanu Moitra |
Swanand Kirkire |
Shreya Ghoshal, Rupankar |
A pleasant ditty but firmly in Sandesh Shandilya territory. -Vibhendu
Lovely - festive and soothing at the same time. -Shalini
The singing would get a 4 from me were it not for the guy (Rupankar). His voice is no match for Shreya's syrupy sweetness. -UVR
Shantanu Moitra needs to get out of the Parineeta/Lage Raho Munnabhai mold - decent fare. -Shashi
Flashes of musical brilliance. The lady singer is good. -Neha |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Vishal Dadlani |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan |
A must hear for the vocals of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The Sufi-sh lyrics are also nice although they get a bit repetetive. -Gajendra
Almost came close to be my most favorite. Is superbly rendered. The arrangement is wonderfully done and the lyrics are pretty nice. -Sowmya
'haalaato.n'? -Rakesh
Musically, this one sounds conceptually indistinguishable from “bahaaraa.N” from I Hate Luv Storys, and just like that song, Rahat makes the song an overall 4 for me! I would give the lyrics a 4 too were it not for the use of 'haalaato.n'. -UVR
Rahat is getting to be monotonous but still like the song, especially the 'rock' feel of the song. Gave extra half point for the scale change surprise - not common in HFM. -Pranav
Could have been a good inspirational song, except the 2nd singer/chorus jars badly. Nice rock like interludes on guitar. Even the lead singer sounds repeatative. -Shashi
I'm just grateful they've given "maula" a rest and gone back to Khuda! -Shalini
The unplugged version plays better perhaps because of Shruti's presence. -Vibhendu |
Sandesh Shandilya |
Gulzar |
Sukhwinder Singh |
Nothing that Sukhwinder has not done before. -Shashi
Excellent similies synchronize well with theme. -Rakesh
Earthy and Folkish. Good to see Sandesh Shandilya back with a full album. -Pavan
Liked the qawwali-feel of the song, especially mixed with drums, and the harmonizing in the vocals. -Pranav
Average song which begins well but leaves something to be desired. -Gajendra
Sukhwinder can make any song sound good! Or atleast bearable. -Neha
Well done modernized punjabi folk. -Shalini
This was an instant hit with me reminding me as it did of If only the orchestration of the song had not featured western instruments quite so prominently and been more folksy, it would have gotten a 4+ rating. -UVR |
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy |
Javed Akhtar |
Adnan Sami, Shankar Mahadevan, Shreya Ghoshal |
The choir-like chorals take the song elsewhere - Shreya Ghoshal redeems the song with her appearance. -Shashi
I'm seriously done with these (this and others from this film) kind of over-produced songs. -Pranav
SEL's superlative arrangement skills are on display in their full unmitigated glory here. The way the singers' voices intermingle with each other and weave through the music is a joy to behold. Not to mention that each singer's limitation and strenghts are exploited to their 'T'. To me this is the best song SEL have produced/arranged on 2010. -UVR
Indistinguishable from all the other inspirational songs out this year. -Shalini |
Hitesh Soni |
Piyush Mishra |
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shilpa Rao |
Piyush's lyrics shine through! -Arun
Rahat seems to be everywhere in 2010. -Shalini
Shilpa Rao is the next big thing in female playback singing. -
Amit Trivedi |
Javed Akhtar |
Tochi Raina |
A bhangra number with Nadaswaram interludes works surprisingly well. -Vibhendu
Gets a little repetitive towards the end. Amit Trivedi deserves some credit for taking a genre that's been over-used in Hindi cinema in the last decade, and coming up with something fresher. -Ramanand
The Tochi Raina-Amit Trivedi combo which gave us ikataaraa last year returns. It's not in the same class but is a good listen. A Punjabish track made keeping the movie in mind. -Gajendra
Amit Trivedi shows Punjabi pop can still be funky & peppy without using heavy instruments and shor sharaabaa. -Pavan
Like the bass line. Don't care about much else. -Pranav
Yet another take on the bhangra - yawn. -Shalini
An above average dance track - catchy beats, Anand Bakshi style rhyming. -Shashi |
A R Rahman |
Abbas Tyrewala |
Sonu Nigam |
Sonu remains reined in, Rahman does not go overboard. The melody is old-fashioned, specially the refrain. The lines 'is phone ki' has a certain rasAbhAv but Tyrewala makes up for it in the first anatara. -Vibhendu
Disappointing. Specially since it's coming from ARR. -Pavan
Sonu deserves better. -Neha
Sonu actually sounds good!!! -Shalini
Sonu should seriously look to get into mimicry - he did that so well in that award show thingy - and not put us through this with his playback singing. Every cup of tea doesn't need 10 spoons of sugar. -Pranav
Nothing special about this song. -Shashi
One of sonu's better ones in 2010 - I have grown to dislike him recently though! -Arun |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Vishal Dadlani |
Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan, Sunidhi Chauhan |
A could-be-better song - so much left incomplete on the table by the singing and lyrics. -Shashi
Shafqat's voice provides the perfect counterbalance to Sunidhi's (falsetto, but who's complaining?) -UVR
There is something amiss about how singers' voices are mixed together. A song that could have been better. -Gajendra |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Kumar |
Shreya Ghoshal, Sona Mahapatra |
A much better version compared to the male part…even the chorus works in this song. -Shashi
The extrabit of sweetness in Shreya works out pretty well to lift the song to a decent song. -Pavan
I like Shreya, but not as much as Rahat! -UVR
To be heard for Shreya's singing! Something really cheerful about her rendition esp of the mukhda. It doesn't have much repeatability for me however. -Gajendra |
Rajesh Roshan |
Nasir Faraaz |
केके K K |
Rajesh Roshan proves he's still alive and kicking - nice vocals. -Shashi
KK's amazing voice! -Arun
Personally, I would've liked to see a bit more conservative music arrangement, but I still loved it overall. -Pranav
Extremely bad lyrics. -
A R Rahman |
Gulzar |
Sukhwinder Singh |
I liked the staccato-nature of the lyrics, short phrases, lots of rhyme, conveying the song of the dispossessed. -Ramanand
ARR diggning into his Rang De Basanti trove - maybe because of the Dilli connection. ARR seems to be the prime choice for josh-bharaa songs - but does not always deliver. This one is tepid too. -Shashi
Honestly, didn't listen past 1 minute mark. -Pranav |
A R Rahman |
Gulzar |
Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Anuradha Sriram |
Rekha Bharadwaj excels, beyond Vishal's music, in a tune that seems tailor-made for her. Rahman's music too is in line with what one would expect out of his association with Maniratnam. -Karthik
ARR seems to have composed this song after the Guru celebration party - very much like the 'maiyaa maiyaa'. This carbon copy is tepid at its best. -Shashi
Rahman rules! -Arun
Amazingly, even though this is somehow different than normal Rahman songs of last few years, it still didn't catch on with me. -Pranav |
Sajid-Wajid |
Jalees Sherwani |
Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal |
“Emotion” is to a singer what salt and spice is to a chef. -UVR
Bring Sonu and Shreya in a song and one is assured of atleast a decent song. This is a soft romantic one to be listened for the duo only. -Gajendra
Wish the singers and lyricist did justice to the tune - wasted. -Shashi
Wish sonu would sing more songs! Shreya's voice sounds so thin! -Neha
Sonu! Why? Again, nothing too earth-shattering in the song, but just beautiful melody! Stanza's first line sounds like from piyaa basantii (album Chitra+Sultan Khan) -Pranav |
Lalit Pandit |
Lalit Pandit |
Mamta Sharma, Aishwarya Nigam |
Though prone to be dismissed as just another item song, this song is surprisingly more than just a gun-for-hire effort. Catchy as hell without sacrificing everything at the altar of sleaze; very well arranged, great energy. -Ramanand
Can I give minus marks on the lyrics for this! -Neha
Excellent job on catchy music and rhythm - should have invested in better lyrics. The singing is raunchy enough - but not exactly competent - more attitude than focus on singing. -Shashi
Of course a big hit - for obvious reasons - but thumping beats are the only thing you notice when listening (not watching) the song. Whatever! -Pranav
Dhinchak dhinchak to the core. After a few forced listens turns out to be a big bore. -Pavan
I would have given '5' to the singing if the male voice had been Sukhwinder's. As for the overall rating, it is hard to argue with mass appeal! -UVR
This “item song” is a total fit for the situation in the movie with lyrics that attract and amuse the listener. You may love or hate the song, but you can't ignore it. No wonder its been blazing everywhere. It is of course a song to be seen which then grows on you. -Gajendra |
Sohail Sen |
Javed Akhtar |
Pamela Jain, Ranjini Jose |
Throwback to the golden era! -Arun
Another version of the Lagaan song 'raadhaa kaise na jale' - cute but no cigar. -Shashi
Uninspiring tune. The lyrics/situation sound similar to 'jaanuu.N jaanuu.N rii' (?). Clearly not in the same class though. -Amarendra
Sounds very similar to 'o jiijii' song of Vivah. -Rakesh
Like the eastern feel. The tune is quite haunting. Not too thrilled about the singing though. They seem faint and weak. The voices are not very compelling. -Sowmya
Pamela Jain and Ranjini Jose (singing her first hindi song after singing in kerala) both seem to be enjoying singing it. -Gajendra
thoda boring ho gaya gaana. -Neha |
Sanjay Leela Bhansali |
A M Turaz |
Sunidhi Chauhan, Shail Hada |
It had me at the first flamenco beat. -Shalini
Loved the gypsy/flamenco/latino style. Sunidhi is outstanding. Could've done better with interludes. Why include the middle-eastern thingy in the end? -Pranav
It's a delightful song with a nice Goan feel. A must hear for Sunidhi's dulcet voice. -Gajendra
Was there any genre spared in this song? Gypsy, Goan, Latin. -Shashi |
Sohail Sen |
Javed Akhtar |
Sohail Sen, Pamela Jain |
Desperately attempts to be classical and East Indian (Bengali) - the strain shows. -Shashi
The Bangla folk influence did take me by a surprise a bit. So notched up the overall by a point. -Pranav
We need more of such songs. Melodius and the instruments not overpowering the soul of the song. -Gajendra |
Salim-Sulaiman |
Mir Ali Husain |
Shafqat Amanat Ali |
The song scores above many for the beautiful sax beginning and interludes. The softness of the song overall as well as the melody is captivating. -Sowmya
Pleasant enough but very familiar. -Shalini
Reminiscent of 'dil meraa mujhase hai kah rahaa' (Life In A Metro), only more subdued. -Amarendra
The song is slow paced and the singing fails to leave an impact though the potential was there. -Gajendra
Too much un-needed harkats by the singer, the song never progresses beyond 'shukriyaa zi.ndagii'. -Shashi |
Pritam |
Irshad Kaamil |
Anupam Amod |
I liked the simplicity of the song… the orchestration is relatively muted and the harmonium was a nice touch. -Shalini
A Good song worth more than a listen especially for the fresh vocals and lyrics. -Gajendra
Found the over-sibilant mukha.Daa chorus quite annoying; the remaining song was quite decent, but I couldn't get over the opening. -Ramanand
Too much auto-tune on the singer. Lovely tune. Liked the encore version a bit better. -Pranav
The tune sounds like a very familiar rehash of something from old. -Shashi
Pritam rehashed it on his last year hit 'kaise bataaye.n' (APKGK). The plastic innocense didn't work for me. -Pavan
"mai.n ko khonaa jii"? -Rakesh
I am surprised how the Anupam Amod version came to be nominated ahead of the Javed Ali version when the latter is hands-down superior in terms of singing and delivery. The refrain (seedhe saade saaraa saudaa...) is at once both cheesy and catchy. -UVR |
Salim-Sulaiman |
Amitabh Bhattacharya |
Salim Merchant, Benny Dayal |
Very Delhi and very jugaa.D in its approach! Goes beautifully well as the film's thoroughly enjoyable opening! -Karthik
Contemporary lyrics are the most noticable aspect of this song, however, have to give high marks to music because of the arrangement - strong rock stamp but has elements of jazz and also folk with harmonium induced. -Pranav
Interesting lyrics. -Gajendra
Very good lyrics (for example, “sar pe maalish ke jaise hai.n mansuube har dil ke, ulajhe baalo.n se lekin raaste hai.n ma.nzil ke, jebo.n me.n rakh le yaaraa ka.nghii hai.n tarakeebe.n”) combined with good singing. -UVR
Very AR Rahmanish in style - except for the harmonium, most of the composition sounds like an ARR composition. -Shashi
Forgettable! -Neha |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Vishal Dadlani |
Vishal Dadlani |
Nice blend of calypso and country western genre - but the singing and lyrics leave a lot to desired. -Shashi
Vishal Dadlani's energetic rendition makes the song worth listening. Music is peppy. -Gajendra
Another youthful song with some great music. The exuberance that the song exudes is amazing. -Sowmya |
A R Rahman |
Gulzar |
Kirti Sagathia, Vijay Prakash |
ARR doing a Ismail Durbar with 'Dhama-dham-dhum-dham' - catchy rhythm, interesting singing…but not only Beera can save this one. -Shashi
Liked the percussions, the African influences and the overall rhythm, but for a song introducing a tough and strange character, lacks strong energy. -Ramanand
Noticed how so many Rahman songs have the same word repeating - biiraa biiraa, raa.Njhaa raa.Njhaa, ra.Ng de ra.Ng de, chhaiyaa chhaiyaa? -Pranav |
Swanand Kirkire |
Swanand Kirkire |
Swanand Kirkire |
If not Khudaa - it should be Maulaa -Shashi
Swanand handles all departments – lyrics, music and singing here. Results are mixed, however. -Gajendra
Nice to see that song can be carried with just a tabalaa and a harmonium in a movie. Well done! -Pranav |
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy |
Javed Akhtar |
Kailash Kher |
Kailash Kher's getting so repetitive. -Shashi
A little too reminiscent of the Kailash Kher-voiced SEL song in Salaam-e-Ishq ('yaa rabbaa'). -Ramanand
Both singers display a good voice quality here. -Gajendra
I found the cling-clang of the manjeeras in the background rather annoyingly distracting. Kailash's singing also didn't impress me much. -UVR |
Sanjay Leela Bhansali |
Vibhu Puri |
Kunal Ganjawala |
10 gram Akkal…20 gram fake Kunal sexiness, all points given for the use of bell, the whistling. -Shashi
There is something attractive about the song and yet... I like Kunal's rendition but there is a lack of cohesiveness in the song that I can't explain. That lowers the score for this one. -Sowmya
Took sime time to grow but the pseudo-poetic song works on many levels. -Pavan
I am sorry – bad pronuncation gets me EVERY time! -UVR
Kunal is starting to sound like Kumar Sanu now. -Neha
Seems like a incoherent mash-up of several elements that appealed to the music director; the parts just don't add up to the whole, and in totality, sounded very affected . -Ramanand
Kunal G tried his best and he's the only saving grace of this - what could've been a really good - song. Pathetic lyrics, especially when it doesn't fit in the meter of the song. Lost it when the Angrezi part started but then I thought it's probably good because saves from listening to the Hindi lyrics. -Pranav
The lyrics are interesting (quite Gulzaarish!). Music is underplayed as per requirement of the song. -Gajendra
The lyrics are a bit too precious for me, but I like the lesiurely pace. -Shalini |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Anvita Dutt Guptan |
Suraj Jagan, Mahalakshmi Iyer |
Seeing more and more classic rock influence in HFM, which is heartening. Interesting drum beat pattern (Dholak style drum beats). -Pranav
Eminently listenable - but nothing special. -Shashi
Fairly good music. -Gajendra |
Pritam |
Sayeed Qadri |
Sonu Nigam |
Sonu has really let me down this year. -Arun
An average song by Sonu which does show what he is capable of in places. -Gajendra
Lovely melody, arrangement is what you'd expect from Pritam - which I like. *But*, just imagine if KK or someone had sung this song! -Pranav
Sonu does a surprisingly good job with the singing here, staying away from the overemoting that seems sadly to have become an integral feature of his voice these days. -UVR
Starts of as a Rafi tune from yore - Sonu reverting back to his sexy singing - but after the 1st antara, he lifts the song to new heights making it a certain for a repeat listen. -Shashi |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Kausar Munir, Irshad Kamil |
Vishal Dadlani, Shilpa Rao |
First got to hear the song for this exercise only, a pleasant surprise. Vishal casts himself against type in the song and Shilpa remains the strongest out of post Sunidhi lot. -Vibhendu
Great rock ballad. Like the leit motif of aas paas Khudaa. Shilpa Rao's voice is mesmerizing. Male voice is autotuned like mad. -Pranav
Yawn... -Pavan
Shilpa Rao's voice quality is something I look forward to. The song is passable however. -Gajendra
Bearable background song - not sure if the tune will live long with me. -Shashi |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Prasoon Joshi |
Vishal Dadlani, Alyssa Mendonsa |
The first few lines by Prasoon Joshi got me hooked to the song. An interesting intro of characters and contrasting nature. -Pavan
The track can get addictive on repeated listening due to its catchy mukhda. -Gajendra
Again with the English lyrics... at least the beat is catchy. -Shalini
Catchy… that's all. -Shashi
This song just didn't do anything for me. -UVR |
Pritam |
Irshad Kaamil |
Mohit Chauhan, Antara Mitra |
Shreya is making herself a master of this type of song. The kind of singing she delivers in these songs is inbelievably sweet. -UVR
How to make a soulless song - full of fizz which fizzles out in under 2 minutes. -Shashi
A song that grows on you. -Gajendra |
Vishal-Shekhar |
Kumar, Vishal Dadlani |
Mohit Chauhan, Shekhar Ravjiani, Shruti Pathak |
The song descends into the banal/familiar/qawwali territory after a great start. But the Punjabi lament and Shruti's voice in the beginning are the best part of the song. Liked the metaphor in the beginning, borrowed or original. -Vibhendu
Nice fusion of love and qawaali genres - all marks to the inspired music. -Shashi
Faint echo of the much better 'Khudaa jaane'. -Shalini
The chorus is better than the lead singers' singing. -Rakesh
Nice orchestration. -Gajendra |

Confused if the song aspires to be a dance, trance or soulful song - does not work on any end for me. -Shashi
Starts off interesting then settles into the same old classical-pop mode. -Shalini
Not a big fan of this derivative song. -Arun |

Sunidhi Chauhan, Ritu Pathak |
Nice rhythm loop in the song, the singer is good, nice dance track. -Shashi
A Holi song as stale as an Ashwarya joke. Strictly for Ash fans. -Pavan
Sunidhi Chauhan and Ritu Pathak's singing is what has made the song a chart buster and is the redeeming feature of the song. The music is passable with Pritam's usual beats. It is too long for its own good, losing steam in between. The old format of 3 minutes had its merits. :). -Gajendra
The song starts off tantalizingly, but doesn't quite rise to meet the energy and power promised by the beginning of the mukhda. The first two lines of the antaraas try, but don't manage to deliver. -UVR
I reckon this song may have had punch on screen but just from music/lyrics/singing perspective, this song is completely forgettable. -Pranav |

Daler Mehdi, Richa Sharma |
Execrable rap, hackneyed composition and lyrics. -Ramanand
Enough already with the English rap lyrics! -Shalini
Classic made-for-night-club song. Daler sings that pitch because he can. Why did Richa have to sing nasal? -Pranav
Daler's singing and the rap made this item song a lot interesting. -Pavan
Both singers sing it with a nice attitude in tune with the theme of the song; made to play in the discos and cars for a time and then to be forgotten in the days to come. -Gajendra
Better songs are composed in the local ganpati and navratri pandals, completely inane lyrics. -Shashi
Who would have thought that Daler's voice suits Akshay Kumar's face? But it does, and does so very well. Lyrics were corny yet appropriate for the song. -UVR |

The best part of the song is rhythm - which was already composed by Kalyanji Anandji… Mika should really learn to pronounce and enunciate complete words. -Shashi
Wondering if there's much point in rating a remix of an old song. -Ramanand
A retake on the early 80s hit made for the discos complete with beats catering to the galleries. Singing is fairly good without comparing to the original Kishore. -Gajendra |
