Highlights of the 8th RMIM Puraskaar

The sound of the year was predominantly Electronica/EDM/Dubstep influenced. Experiments and fusion continued, mixing folk with rock and Hindi/Urdu with not merely English but Punjabi, Haryanavi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, and even French. One could also notice a growing tendency of music artists to try various roles. More and more music directors and lyricists were seen singing. In fact, Amit Trivedi is our artist of the year for two categories - Music Director and Male Singer.

Music
- Amit Trivedi had another very successful year. He had 13 songs in our final list. He is our "Music Director of the year" second year in a row. maa.Njhaa (Kai Po Che) was adjudged the "Best Composed Song" and "Song of the Year". His album Lootera enters the RMIM Hall of Excellence for all-time greatness and wins "Album of the Year".
- SEL and Pritam each had 8 songs; Vishal Bhardwaj 5; ARR 4 in the list.
- Sachin-Jigar were present a whole lot more than expected, with 8 songs.
- There were some new names like Falak Shabir, Ankit Tiwari, Maatibani in the list, where as an old timer M M Kreem also showed up.
Lyrics
- The "Lyricist of the Year" was Amitabh Bhattacharya and by a good margin. As if that was not enough, he also sang a few of songs.
- Gulzar shows up ever so rarely now-a-days but his work is still worth the wait. His KhaamaKhaa was adjudged the "Best Written Song of the Year". Among veteran lyricists, Javed Akhtar was conspicuosly absent.
- Swanand Kirkire, Irshad Kamil, Prasoon Joshi, Jaideep Sahni, Neelesh Misra, and Niranjan Iyengar also made their presence felt. It's good to see a strong body of lyrical talent continuing for so long now.
Singing
- The year was very widely spread among singers. No one singer really dominated the space. Several new names showed up on the list.
- Rekha Bhardwaj came up on top due to high ratings of whatever she sang.
- Shreya continued a good presence and was generally received well. Sunidhi seemed to be fading in terms of opportunities.
- Amit Trivedi, by virtue of singing almost everything that he composed, was omnipresent.
- The singing scene, on the whole, seems to be in search of the next big voice. But may be there isn't going to be a voice that dominates the scene, any more.
Finally, thanks to everyone who nominated their favorite songs or helped spread the word. Our 18 volunteer jury members deserve special thanks for their time and being patient to my repeated enquiries and reminders.
