The guitar backing and late rhythm pickup are very interesting; trademark bass and beats make this is a very Rahman song but one in the top tier of his work. Simple lyrics and superbly sung -- a winner all the way. -Ramanand "Hatke" lyrics, well-sung, good blend of english and hindi lyrics. -Manisha What's with the nose singing? The nasal nakhras don't go with the actor on screen. -Ketan Good catchy music runied by bad pronunciation. -Subrat An instantly catchy tune rescues some atrocious pronunciation by the singer. -Aditya Catchy! Don't care for the accent though -- serious flashbacks to "ai u.Dii u.Dii" from Saathiya. -Sanjeev Refreshingly different lyrics. The guy is too nasal - and seems to justify the "gaanaa to aataa nahii.n hai" bit in the lyrics! -Abhay Some words get lost in the staccato singing. Nicely composed, but this remains a weak spot. -Chetan |

The progressive notes of the mukhda are very well composed, and when it reaches crescendo the 'Khudaa jaane' refrain is sure to stick-on. One of the better songs of 2008. -Aditya KK scales the high notes beautifully. Shilpa Rao balances him well. Musically, it is rich and vivid, with a lovely use of harmony and scale changes. The lyrics are simple but well suited to the mood. Most importantly though, it all comes together beautifully. A lovely example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. -Megha Excellent tune and singing (male singer). -Ketan KK is crisp moving up and down the scale, female vocals good too. Tune is perhaps a bit contrived, though I like the instrumentation (particularly the way the drums parallel KK's ascent on "Khuda Jaane…"). -Sanjeev |

Best song in the movie. Love the tune and the singing. -Ketan
Beautiful song, and quite a contrast to the other songs of the album; Nice bass and typical S-E-L riffs; Such western oriented female solos aren't common in Hindi films. -Ramanand Just love Dominique's voice. -Subrat |

Dulcet melody right off the bat; Rahman once again proves he can make classy tunes. Great interludes too. -Ramanand What a delightful tune! Simple and elegant. The interludes capture the Arabic feel through the use of rabaab (sarod?). -Aditya Javed Ali has a unique voice; clear diction which these days is a rarity esp in Rahman songs. -Subrat Nice tune but I wish he had picked a better singer (voice wise). -Ketan Good tune and singing that could have benefited from better lyrics. -Abhay |

While ARR's singing is technically weak, he more than makes up for it by the emotions he puts into the song. -Ketan
Brilliant song. The layers of vocals and instruments work well in evoking the necessary Sufi 'trance' moods Adding a bass guitar to such a song is highly conventional, but comes off superbly. The quality of the melody is illustrated in the accompanying oboe solo. -Ramanand Great song; works as a package. -Subrat No one can better Rahman when it comes to composing sufi qawallis. The rawness of Rahman's voice works well for this one, although his Urdu talaffuz is not adequate. -Aditya The song exposes Rahman's relative unfamiliarity with handling the throw/distribution of Urdu words (compared to say, Tamil). -Sanjeev Good song that could have become great if Rahman has not insisted on singing it himself! -Abhay |

Beautifully contemplative song; very nice modulations from the singer. -Ramanand Refreshing music with words that touch you instantly.Such was the impact of the song that it become the song of the nation when NDTV first played it after the Mumbai tragedy. -Maneesh Deducting a point for the heavy breathing in the song by the singer since the movie/scene does not require it. Otherwise well sung. -Ketan What about this song demands the breathless singing Ms Rao produces? A song with great promise but below-par delivery. -Abhay Simple melody, distinctive signing which stays with you. -Subrat Touching lyrics are set to an evocative tune. The constant bass notes for about 3/4 of the song lend an element of tragedy to this song, in line with the film situation. The song changes gears when the male voice takes over, which adds another dimension to the song. -Aditya Hypnotic effect (including harmony) but for the double-tempo rhythm at the end must be situational. Female vocals have good texture, but sound a bit dry/stretched on the top end. -Sanjeev |

Over the last couple of years, Shreya has impressively come out of the shadows and grown tremendously as a singer. She is a lot more confident and mature. RFAK is on home ground here and delivers. -Chetan Strong on melody, Rahat and Shreya's singing is the strength of this song. -Aditya Good song. Hesitate to call it a very good song. -Ketan Very good singing by Shreya. -Manisha Good use of male-female vocals, not forcing them to sing in octaves as in traditional duets. Finally a recognizably Indian tune I can follow. -Sanjeev |

Superbly sung, especially the aalaaps. -Ramanand A traditional classical bandish gets a fresh modern treatment. Very good singing by Vijay Prakash. -Aditya Singer sounds a little unsure of his classical pieces. -Ketan One of the best tracks of the year. -Subrat Great execution of a modern twist to a classical song. -Manisha The singer (Vijay Prakash) is talented and there are flashes of his brilliance however, without seeing the film and knowing if the song is specifically used for a purpose, no real credit to ARR here, just a haphazard collage. -Sanjeev An interesting experiment that doesn’t quite work out. -Abhay |

Very good classical based song. Sadhna Sargam shines through, even as Sukhwinder is good as usual. -Aditya Not sure how popular it is/was, but an *intense* track. Good weight/texture in vocals, plus raag-base is refreshing here. -Sanjeev Very good singing. -Ketan Tends to get repeitive; weak lyrics, Sukhwinder does his bit. -Subrat Simplistic lyrics, but very well sung. -Manisha Roopa Dhawan had postulated on RMIM a category of songs she called "Dhiilaa" songs - songs that fall just short of being really good. This song is a good fit - it has the right ingredients in terms of tune, words, and singing but the recipe somehow doesn't quite work. -Abhay |

Sonu is good, and his voice seems to fit Hrithik, though the tune is a bit dry. -Ketan
Though the chorus section distracts, the male part of the melody is excellent, and nicely supported by a cast of Indian stringed instruments. -Ramanand Finally a Rahman song that relies more on accoustic than electronic instruments. Sung with feeling by Sonu, but Madhushree's voice seems strained while negotiating the higher notes. -Aditya Good song -- male vocals are better than female. Obvious reminders of "bhaarat hamako jaan se pyaaraa hai" -Sanjeev |

Great balance of orchestration; wonderful weaving of music and lyrics; lyrics convey the predicament of the character, mixing pessimism and plea. -Ramanand Who says ARR is the only one who can compose sufi music? Loved the overall feel of the song. -Ketan Very relevant lyrics, a Suifi track that stands out in a surfeit of Sufi tracks. -Subrat The best song of the film, is structured like a sufiana qawwali. The use of banjo(?) as the leitmotif to this song works well. -Aditya On the surface, just another attempt at a "Sufi" song voices not *that* impressive. However, the "tag line" (Haa Raham, Haa Raham…) is *very* catchy and makes me want to hear the song again. Light orchestration an advantage. -Sanjeev I am a sucker for the Sufiana/Qawali styles, hence give more points to music. Better singing would have taken the song to a higher plane. -Chetan |

Vintage Gulzar! -Abhay What a great line 'zi.ndagii zi.ndagii kyaa kamii rah gayii, aa.Nkh kii kor me.n kyuu.N namii rah gayii" -- IMO that's Gulzar's best line in recent times. The antara starts off a bit oddly, but gets back to the basic melody quite seamlessly. -Aditya Nice low-key usage of instruments. Voice is a bit thin and unsteady in certain parts. -Ketan Particularly liked the lyrics on this one. -Ramanand |

A rare Indian percussion driven song in recent times; The range of drums and other percussions is quite impressive. -Ramanand Theatrical stuff right up Rahman's alley, though reminiscent of "baar-baar haa.N" from Lagaan and similar stuff. -Sanjeev There's a certain mood in the film to which this song caters to very specifically. -Subrat Excellent use of chorus, brilliant blend of Hindi and Urdu lyrics. -Manisha ARR needs to get some different percussions in his orchestra. He has been repeating this rhythm of loud beats since Roja. -Ketan Thumping percussion and sound of the bigul lend character to this song in praise of the king. The taranas that embellish the song are nice too. -Aditya |

Love the soft ballad singing and great usage of a guitar strumming and piano. Not overdoing it makes it good. -Ketan A really nice ballad. Minimalist music adds to the charm. -Abhay I like the voice, the music. There's a sense of serenity. -Subrat A minimalist composition, with the strumming of the guitar being the primary accompaniment to the vocals. -Aditya This is another bland "easy listening" track, vocals are nice, but what exactly is "Indian" about it? -Sanjeev |

I like the tune, but the singing took it to new heights. -Chetan Wonderful song, sung very well by Sukhvinder. -Aditya Sukhwinder's energy is infectious. Incorporates folk lyrics and instruments in the music quite well, which is a rarity these days. And this despite the movie/scene not requiring a folk song. -Ketan Nicely onomatopoeic; serves as a good counterpoint to the film's tension; well arranged percussions; I thought this was a very imaginative composition, and the lyrics were extremely different from the other soundtracks. -Ramanand The arrangements etc. have some nice features, but the editing and mixing is a bit sloppy, otherwise the music would have gotten higher points. -Chetan Like the rusticity of the track, there's a robustness to the voice which suits the lyrics. -Subrat Nice Euphoria-ic feel to it. -Megha Earthy singing does justice to the rustic creative lyrics -Manisha Pleasantly quirky lyrics get a folksy treatment. -Aditya |

Sonu's humming in the beginning and in one of the interludes is the highlight of this song. Javed Ali also sings well. The tune is simple and embellished in a manner that the vocals remain at centrestage. -Aditya Another polished product. I wish voice production was a bit less strained. Also the emphasized "sh" of guzaarish could have been, well, more natural. -Chetan Trademark old-style Rahman -- sparingly arranged with an excellent melody fronting the song, uncomplicated beat and a good bass line; The lyrics are a bit of a letdown, especially since it’s Prasoon Joshi (the likes of "motii ho.nge raaho.N me.n" are not very special). -Ramanand The tune grows on you after 2-3 listenings but the singing is really the weak point here. -Ketan |

Why is it that Raahat and Shafqat are getting most of the better songs? -Sanjeev Remarkable song! Everything comes together very well. I sometimes find Rahat off-key but he is great in this song. For my money, the best song of the year. -Abhay Vishal didn’t do much in 2008, but this was a terrific cameo for a film destined to sink on arrival; Raahat Fateh Ali Khan is nothing short of brilliant, which isn't much of a surprise; Munna Dhiman pours in the yearning with a few Gulzar-esque touches ("aajaa tujhe haatho.n pe kismato.n sa likh luu.n"); There are several Vishal trademarks throughout the song, which made it one of the best of the year. -Ramanand Rahat FAK brings the song down. -Ketan |

Nice bhajan. However unless one sees the bhajan in the context of what's happening on screen (Akbar preparing for war) it is difficult to understand the heavy violins and trumpets and to understand that the 'kanhaa' she is referring to is now Akbar and not Krishna. Plus putting it in touches of raag Bairagi which is a 'virah' raag as they are about to be separated is a good touch too. -Ketan
Pleasant voice. Singing could have easily been better. Busy arrangements for this "type" of song. -Chetan Though competently made, pales in comparison to the other songs in the album. -Ramanand Bela Shende sounds very much like Shreya; exceptional performance in this song. -Manisha It's rare to hear a bhajan in films these days, so this song is welcome change. Has an old-world charm to it as the vocals and lyrics are not drowned by the orchestration. -Aditya Melody wanders aimlessly. -Sanjeev |

Good usage of brass instruments and piano. However why does ARR insist on singing in Hindi? What could have been a good blues song is destroyed by his pronunciations. -Ketan
I found this Louis Armstrong-like number very pleasant and very different from most songs of the year. -Ramanand Works because of we haven't come across many jazz numbers in Hindi films. Has all the elements of jazz including the quintessential Sax pieces. -Aditya This could have actually been a cool song had someone besides ARR sung it. Lovely song. Good use of percussions. Not too late for the P of L-P to take lessons in how to use 'dholak' and 'dafli'. The layout, and orchestration of this song feels similar to Euphoria's "Mai Ree" though by no means is this song inspired by 'Mai Ree". -Ketan Melodious song, but remains just that. Extremely ear-pleasing but does not stay with one for long. Shreya Ghoshal outperforms Shail Hada in the singing department. -Aditya Cliched lyrics, Shail's singing makes the song weaker. -Manisha |

Bland "easy-listening" track what's with the accent? -Sanjeev Nice tune but singing could have been better. -Ketan Further establishes the youth-pop texture of the film this is very reminiscent of the ABBA style nicely embellished. -Ramanand The music and the great lyrics make up for the singing. -Abhay |

Tune reminiscent of stuff from Parineeta ("Piyu Bole" and the other Sonu-Shreya duet). Overall the song sounds like a commercial. -Sanjeev The male singer is uninspiring. He makes Madhushree sound great! -Abhay |

The delibrate slurring actually works for this song. The overall effect is positive. Singing has some very redeeming features good variations, breath control etc. Accompanying music is very polished. -Chetan The tune isn't bad but the singer makes it irritating. -Ketan One of those Rahman tunes that tends to grow on the listener; interesting little shake-ups in the middle; nice jazz orchestration and sax interludes. -Ramanand Sung by Karthik with the right expression of attitude. The use of sax in the interludes and the unusually tuned stanzas are the high points of this songs. -Aditya |

Adnan Sami sounds energized. Typical Latin feel. -Sanjeev |

The word 'Bill' does not rhyme with the word "novel" even if Farhan tries to make it into 'Novil'. The 'na na na na' part is a good catchy touch. -Ketan Farhan's imperfect vocals work well in a rock song like this. The lyrics, though appear weird, are true to the genre. The na na na na hook is appealing. -Aditya *Love* the lyrics :-) …good guitar and drums work, probably faithful to the original genre, but no way it gets the award in my book. Genre aside, I think they could have found a more solid and convincing voice than Farhan Akhtar (even if he was the one onscreen) -Sanjeev I find Farhan to be a non-singer. Guess it is not a popular opinion :) -Chetan Cute lyrics! -Abhay |

Gulzar? -Ketan Extremely cliched and juvenile lyrics, very average song. -Manisha The lyrics could surely have addressed better mysteries than the nursery rhyme level stuff done here! Reminds me of similarly worded songs from 'Daag' and 'Kaho Na Pyar Hai'. -Abhay The lyrics try hard to be 'meaningful' but it doesn't work. As a composition, it is quite good though. -Aditya |

Good tune but the singing could have been better. It's good to have the spirit of trying to be authentic and retain Farhan's voice, but there are times that rule could and should be broken. -Ketan Corny lyrics, but it all works somehow! -Abhay Weak singing. -Manisha In a melody oriented song like this, the 'cracks' in Farhan's singing become a bit obvious. The falsetto tansitions also seem a bit laboured. -Aditya |

It would be interesting to listen to the singers voices in this song without the special effects: I suspect the song would actually sound much nicer. As it is, the song is a mish-mash of electronic sound effects. The lyrics are confused: what on earth does "to.De jiyaa moraa" mean? -Abhay Beautifully sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Roop Kumar. -Aditya Well-sung, though don't get the design of the song. Sum total it's an "easy listening" track. Sunidhi shows flair for the Indian classical elements that doesn't normally get highlighted -- "soft" voice sounds nice but not entirely comfortable... feels like she is holding back, I miss the *bite* of her other renditions. Roopkumar is solid. -Sanjeev Good tune, nice opening and instrumentation. Good usage of tablas. The chorus is fine, but the main singers take something away. -Ketan I had to go back and check the female singer! Sunidhi showing off her versatility here. Roopkumar is also very good, though a bit overwrought. -Chetan |

Clever use of Persian phrases in the lyrics as well as individually brilliant lines like "shani jab Talegaa…" or "bheje me.n bhauchaal hai, pairo.n me.n paataal hai", but Gulzar's words don't work as a whole. The weakest song in an otherwise brilliant album (ignoring shano shano which is easily the worst). -Aditya Sonu has too many nakhras. Alka sounds past her age and bad in some parts. -Ketan Well tuned for a "musical" theme Gulzar and Rahman experiment, throwing caution to the winds. -Ramanand Good but Rahman can create such songs in his sleep. -Subrat Offbeat lyrics blend in effortlessly into the song. -Manisha This, now, does work - although Alka Yagnik almost succeeds in spoiling it - she is going the way of the 1990s Lata here! -Abhay |

A surprise interlude from what seemed like a mandolin or modified guitar was the highlight in an interesting song. -Ramanand Easy on the ear, but just about average on the whole. Base tune is taken from "Jalte hain jiske liye" (Sujata-SDB). Usage of accordion seems to be a tribute to RK Films. Good touch. -Ketan Sonu seems to be trying to sound like Mukesh singing "zindagii Khwaab hai" in 'Jagte Raho' - and the effect is quite pleasing! -Abhay Very nice centrepiece accordion. -Ramanand Interesting old-style feel, Sonu Nigam's usually fine intonation seems to surprisingly slip a bit in places -- maybe intentional? Good low stuff. -Sanjeev Singing elevates a nicely architected melody. -Subrat Works very well in the film, but as a standalone music piece appears very ordinary. Kailash Kher seems to sing every song the same way. -Ketan A bit over-rated actually. -Subrat Guitar entry is nice, vocal entry does not seem like the song will be anything much, but the song takes off nicely later. Kailesh Kher's work in the top is nice. I am a fan of light instrumentation, so liked this part. -Sanjeev A cute song with minimal orchestration, which goes well with the on-screen situation. Again, nothing out of the ordinary. I winced when Kailash Kher said 'jyaadaa' in one of the stanzas. -Aditya My original rating was "good" - then I saw the video! This songs works because of Vinay Pathak and Sarita Joshi - listening to it without seeing them enact it doesn't work quite as well. ARR should really stop singing. -Ketan Just too many styles in this song -- found it too convoluted. -Ramanand Very intricate composition, blending indian and western classical elements. A tad too long, though. Gets repeititive after the 5 minute point. "ye rishtaa pak jaane de" is vintage Gulzar, though one wishes he had come up with something new. -Aditya What ails Gulzar? This is bilge! Rahman is sad too: the "operatic" sargam sounds simply silly. -Abhay Broadway-esque orchestra sounds great, Sonu/Roopkumar are good voices, but… another ho-hum number. What the hell just happened? This is Jasraj sounding like Adnan! Very poor utilization of a wonderful (if slighly aged) voice. As for playback singing, the harkats are misplaced. Overall a dud. As an aside is this Jasraj's first foray into Hindi films after Ladki Sahyadri Ki? -Chetan Why would Jasraj do this?? Mediocre words, tinpot tune. I wanted to rate the singing 1 - it is 2 only because I want to be sure that my bias against the post-mid-1980s Jasraj is not playing a role here. 2 overall because the song ends well. -Abhay A very odd choice for Pandit Jasraj, he sounds out of place in this slightly overcooked film song. -RJ The music overpowers the singing a little too much. A perfectly good waste of Pandit Jasraj. -Megha Extremely cliched lyrics, badly sung (I actually can't believe it's Pundit Jasraj!) -Manisha Pt.
